The most prestigious district of Kiev - Pechersk
There are about 10 districts in Kiev, one of the most prestigious, and perhaps one of the richest in the sights is Pechersk. It is located south of Downtown on a hill which consists of Pechersk and Lipki. The main street of this district is named after M. Grushevskiu last bearing the name of the Revolutionary and Kirov street, and in 1991 received the name of the first President. It starts at the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra and descends to the European square - the beginning of Downtown. While you descend to the center, you will open not only great views of the Left Bank, but also bushy thickets, which unusual for the center of the vast metropolis, in Mariinsky Park and the Park of Glory.
Until the early XVIII century, Pecherskiu hill represented a continuous forest wilderness. In 1706, Emperor Peter the Great built the fortress, which encircled Lavra with all its institutions.
Pechersk is the cluster of palaces; look only at House with Chimeras, which was by the famous architect Gorodetsky, who is also known as Ukranian Gaudi. Art Museum of Ukraine was also built by this architect in the neoclassical style. In Marriinsky park you can find Mariinsky Palace built in the middle of the XVIII by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. The building is in the baroque style, interior decoration will remind you the style of Louis XVI.
Before the beginning of World War II many buildings of administrative value began to be built up intensively all over Pechersk. One building is the Council of People's Commissars, which is now the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.
Halfway up the European Square, you will see the Square of Fame on which located hotel «Salut» of very bizarre shape and the House of youth.
There are many versions of the origin of the name of this district, one is that name has been derived from the name of the main shrine of Ukrainian - Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. Every year thousands of pilgrims come here to see the holy place, where the chronicle Nestor wrote "The Tale of Bygone Years", where the first printing house and one of the top schools were originated. Kiev-Pechersk Lavra is located on the territory of the museum complex of Kiev-Pechersk Preserve.
Askold's Tomb is another attraction worth visiting. Located between Highway Embankments, Park of Eternal Glory and the Mariinsky park.
Lipki is mini district in Pechersk. This place is rich in great amount of aristocratic buildings.
Ukranian House, which is on the European Square, now held’s different exhibitions. In the XIX it housed the first Ukranian theatre. We can talk hours about Pechersk. On the edge of the district is a memorial complex dedicated to the history of the Great Patriotic War, on the territory of which the statue of Motherland (height 102 meters) is located.
And if, while walking around Kiev with a guided tour, you will want to know which area you are in, ask and most likely the answer will be "Pechersk".
